Is it normal for my AC unit to leak water?

- 3:16 pm - March 14th, 2024

It’s normal for your central air conditioner to leak a small amount of water due to condensation forming during use. However, excessive leaking can indicate a problem. A small puddle is likely normal, but constant pooling around the unit and water seeping into your home from your central air system can cause costly damage.

Here are potential causes of your leaky air conditioner:

  • Frozen evaporator coil: This is the most common cause of leaks – dust, algae, and debris can build up and block the line, which causes an overflow.

  • Dirty air filters: Dirty air filters can block airflow and prevent airflow over the evaporator coil, which leads to condensation and water leakage and can damage parts of your system.

  • Damaged condensate drain pans: Your drain pan collects the condensation from your air conditioner.

  • Broken condensate pump: A condensate pump moves water outside your home.
