7 Types of HVAC Filters for Your Home

The air filter in your HVAC system plays a vital role in keeping your home’s air clean and breathable. Your HVAC system’s air filter has a MERV rating (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Values) ranging from 1 to 16, and this value determines how effective your filter will be at trapping particles. The higher the MERV rating, the better the filter will be at catching particles, and each filter has a different MERV rating. With so many filter options available, choosing the right one can be overwhelming. Here’s a quick guide to the 7 common types of HVAC filters.

  1. Electrostatic filters: These filters use static electricity to attract and trap dust particles. They’re generally washable and reusable.
  2. HEPA filters: HEPA filters are the gold standard for air filtration. They trap up to 99.97% of dust, pollen, pet dander, mold, and other irritants, making these filters ideal for allergy sufferers and those with respiratory conditions. These are typically rated MERV 11 or higher.
  3. Fiberglass filters: These are the most affordable air filters on the market. They’re effective in trapping large particles such as dust, pollen, and carpet fibers. and have an average MERV rating of 4.
  4. Pleated filters: Pleated filters offer better filtration for dust, pollen, mold spores, pet dander, and other small particles. The MERV ratings for these filters usually range between 5 and 13.
  5. Carbon filters: Activated carbon filters are designed to remove odors and gaseous pollutants from the air. They’re often combined with pleated filters for a more comprehensive filtration solution.
  6. Washable filters: As the name suggests, these filters can be washed and reused, making them a cost-effective option for air filtration.
  7. UV light filters: These filters use ultraviolet light to kill viruses, bacteria and mold spores within your HVAC system. They’re usually installed in conjunction with another type of filter, since they are not as effective at removing dust and other allergens.
